From late Wednesday night to Sunday evening, Mr Rogers, Mr Cross and Miss Dobson took 30 Year 9 pupils to France to explore some key sights from WW1 and WW2.
Pupils explored the historic battlefields, learned about the bravery and sacrifice of those who fought during the Great War, and reflected on the lasting impact of these events. Visits to these memorials provided a meaningful opportunity to connect classroom learning with real-life history and to deepen their understanding of remembrance.
Pupils experienced:
- The Calais Dragon
- The Ulster Memorial on the Somme, with a tour of one of the graveyards and the trenches that the Ulster Division launched an attack from.
- The Lochnagar Crater (the largest World War One crater - the explosion was heard from London!)
- Vimy Ridge Memorial and trench system.
- Walking along Dunkirk beach
- St Omer Market
- Blockhaus d’Éperlecques (the largest bunker in northern France)
- Chocolate making at a chocolate factory
